What is Reiki?

This is a question I get asked a lot, even from people who have already booked an appointment to experience it first-hand. There are many ways to explain Reiki, each with a different angle or audience in mind. The explanation that resonates most with how I see and experience Reiki is this:
Reiki is an energy healing technique that promotes healing, balance, and relaxation through the channelling of universal life force energy.
If you are new to the topic, this may still not fully answer your question. After all, what is universal life force energy? How does someone “channel” it? And what does it mean for your healing, balance, or relaxation?
Let’s take a closer look.

At its core, Reiki is based on the understanding that everything is made of energy—including our bodies, thoughts, and emotions. When this energy flows freely and is balanced, we feel well, both physically and emotionally. However, stress, illness, or life’s challenges can block or disrupt this flow, leaving us feeling out of sync.
This is where Reiki comes in. During a Reiki session, a practitioner uses their hands to help guide and balance the flow of energy in your body. It’s not about the practitioner giving you their energy or “fixing” anything—it’s about facilitating your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
People often describe Reiki as deeply relaxing, like a wave of calm washing over them. Some may feel warmth, tingling, or a sense of lightness during a session, while others may simply feel more grounded and at peace.
While the experience varies from person to person —and even from session to session— one thing remains consistent: Reiki addresses what needs attention and supports your healing in a gentle, profound way. The positive effects are often noticeable during the session and can continue to unfold in the days or weeks that follow.
